Hooks & Hints

Hingashi Nobility: Emiko is Hingashi nobility from a large and influential family and as such has all the benefits and drawbacks of it. Fujiwara normally hold places of political power while also enjoying the bounty of their land and serving as a large source of both raw materials and manufactured goods. She would be widely known among other nobility and even some commoners. Feel free to know of her before interacting!Teahouse: Owning a chain of teahouses, Emiko is quite the savy business woman. Emiko also uses these locations to gather all sorts of information. She uses this to stay out of any further arranged engagements or marriages.Dark Past: Emiko has some hidden secrets and her hands aren't clean. Perhaps someone who also deals in secrets might know just what's happened and may or may not have the full story. (Message me for more info.)Network of Informants: Emiko has a vast amount of informants loyal to her. Whether it's the server pouring tea at her teahouse to the person purchasing supplies for her, all of her employees gather intel for her. She employs mostly women who wish to stand on their own and escape their obligations, be it arranged marriage such as herself, or worse. She pays them well, such as her father does his, and keeps the family reputation going for treating their workers well.Arranged Marriage: Set to be married to one of the sons of the current "ruling" clan, Mitsurugi, Emiko cleverly avoided being married off for the first time, but how will she fair on the second?Secret Ninja Priestess: Trained at the local shine to heal and aid the wounded, Emiko was set to be the perfect bride to a militaristic husband. However her father also taught her to always keep a dagger tucked away in her robes and how to use it. She also has a passing skill with a Katana, more for show, and would easily be bested by someone skilled in it's use.Patron of the Arts: Art, poetry, theatre, the Fujiwara clan as well as Emi all love art in all it's forms. Perhaps you're looking for someone to fund your artistic journey?

History
You Found the Secret Past!
Fujiwara Clan
The Fujiwara is a large noble clan ruling in Hingashi, rivals to the Mitsurugi clan who currently "rule." The Fujiwara do not excel in military strength like their rivals and instead focus on being political officials, when not being savvy businessmen. The Fujiwara have traditionally used marriage as a way to consolidate their political power and form alliances and keep enemies in check.
Emiko
Born as the third child, and first daughter, Emiko's birth would cost her mother's life. A loving mother, always kind to her sons, and a dedicated wife to her husband Masashi, she was sorely missed and it took no time for the three of them to spurn the infant Emiko. Masashi knew his grief was misplaced, but it was hard to care for the baby that was the cause of her death.Emi's early years as a baby and young child were spent in the care of nursemaids and caretakers, very rarely visited by her busy father and barely acknowledged by her brothers, who were attending to their training and education. In particular Emiko remembers two women in her life. The first caretaker and the last would prove monumental in the shaping of her personality. The first cared for her as a baby and young child and would often abuse Emiko, knowing full well no one would take the child's word. She was strict, cruel, and physically violent beyond normal standards of the time. It's no wonder Emiko constantly looked lonely and longed for attention and affection. With no one to talk to, she began to listen instead. The maids would gossip while the higher ranking women would speak even further on those that were true..Once her education and own training began, though far different from her brother's, she began to understand the value in listening and putting it to good use. She learned how to read and write in both Hingan and Commmon, the art of conversation, tea ceremony, art, music, and art of the blade and healing. She was well on her way to being a proper lady, capable of defending the home and aiding her future husband. Despite Emiko excelling in her studies, the abuse from her caretaker continued and the rumors and stories Emiko heard got worse as time passed. The woman would abuse the maids or anyone below her, she was stealing from the Fujiwara's to pay back debts she owed, and eventually Emiko, as she grew older and more capable, put it all together that this woman would do anything to get out of debt..It wasn't long after Emiko had begun to figure out the pieces, when the caretaker snuck into Emiko's room late one night, with all intents to assassinate the budding teenager. But Emiko was prepared, she had heard of her new debts, knew how severe they were and to who. It was the caretaker who found a knife to her throat instead that night. Emiko was shaky at best, nervous, it was her first time defending herself and she didn't know how to proceed. Kill the woman now that she had to upper hand? But her hand was forced for her when the woman tried desperately to go through with it anyway, her debt too great. Emiko was left with no choice. The woman now laid dead and Emiko screamed in horror of the whole situation.Emiko was shaken for a while after that, and found it difficult to trust her new caretaker, however she would prove to be the opposite of her previous in every way and she took the time to slowly take little Emiko under her wing. Once Emiko looked into it and found she could be trusted, for now, and she opened up to her. This new woman taught her all manner of things, both good and bad, to help the poor girl make it with the unfair hand she was dealt. Most importantly she learned a sense of justice that helped her get over her first kill, as she reminded her it wouldn't be the last for a woman in her station. At 18 summers, Emiko had learned a lot and had become a proud and strong young woman. She began to hear gossip and rumors over her being married off soon. This put Emiko and her caretaker's plan in to motion. Emiko had saved nearly all her extra spending money, rather then spend it on little things here and there. She used that money to purchase a small building in Kugane and saw fit to open her very fist teahouse with it and her leftover funds. Overseen by none other then her caretaker now that Emiko no longer needed one, the two began to serve tea and gather information on the side while doing so.They learned all manner of truth and falsehood and began to discern which one's were which. Behind the scenes, Emiko manipulated situations to her advantage. Then one day it happened. Her father wished to speak with her. While they spoke on occasion, Emiko knew what this was about. She was the right age, the rumors were floating around about who it would be.. sure enough, it was to declare her engaged. Emiko was saddened by the news but didn't let it show, she simply asked "To whom, father?" before her world was torn apart. A son of the Mitsirugi!? She had regarded those rumors as merely that, rumors! Emiko was devastated and it showed, for she knew what type of people they were. Masashi dismissed her all the same and Emiko returned to her teahouse to figure things out.Upon speaking with her caretaker, they hatched a plan to get her out of the marriage. They worked hard to gather all manner of intel and Emiko began to feed little bits to her father over dinner slowly. It took some time, but soon he began to call on her for small things and eventually larger things. All the while, Emiko began to learn how truly horrible this branch's son was. First it was gambling, then the brothels.. it grew worse with each rumor. Emiko resolved herself to get out of this as soon as she could. It was almost time for her to go stay at the Mitsurugi estate as a show of good faith when Emiko suddenly stopped helping her father. It took no time for him to summon her and question what was wrong. She quickly replied that if she was to move from the estate and eventually the family, that she would have to tell her soon to be husband this information instead, as she would be a wife and not a daughter any longer. Masashi froze, as he had become used to her intel by now. At first he sent Emiko away, but Emi wasted no time spreading the rumors of just what type of man the Mitsurugi was. It took 3 days before Masashi called her again. "Tell me all you know, daughter." Emiko gave a faint smile and divulged all she knew and once she was finished, Masashi nodded in agreement. "I trust you to handle it"It was a week before anything happened. Emiko was summoned and with great delight she was ready to hear that the engagement was over. Instead her father made a request. "Keep an eye on him a little longer." Emiko was clearly disheartened, but the way he said is gave her hope. And so she did, gathering as much information as she good that eventually lead to the discovery of something far beyond her level of skill: black market dealings with the underground.Emiko wasn't sure how to proceed. She was set to have dinner with her future husband that evening. She was scared to go, but she went regardless, hoping it would provide her with more information to get her out of this. Once at their estate, it was clear they were showing off. Emiko instead paid attention to other things, how the staff looked, how they reacted, and one in particular caught her eye. The maid of the son. She seemed almost broken, flinching in response to certain things. This was it, her chance. Emiko played it off as she was hoping to learn more of her future husband, but once she caught the maid privately, she was blunt. "Tell me everything."It would take three tries before she let anything beyond lies and cover ups slip. She was clearly scared and rightfully so, Emiko discovered. The maid was bought as a slave and all manner of horrible thing had been done to her. This hardened Emiko's resolve and she knew what she must do. "You'll be ok.. I promise."Emiko would keep her word, even if it took time. She was careful about the timing, and she made sure to make it look like illness - slowly before she even moved in, Emiko began to slip a mixture of poison into his drinks and meals. It was the cold season and no one suspected a thing when he began to get sick more frequently. Emiko, now moved in, worked with his maid to try and nurse him back to health, all the while the cloth she wet his head with was laced with lead. She even eased up for a few weeks to make it look like he was recovering, but swung back full swing before the season was over and her cover blown. He passed just before spring and Emiko was secretly relieved. While it wouldn't solve the problem fully, it did take a high ranking piece out of the puzzle. The Mitsurugi were naturally suspicious of what happened, but with no proof it was hard to say little else. Emiko was even careful to make sure his old maid was hers now, speaking of how the bonded during his sickness. She had to pay a premium for her, which she wasn't surprised given their love of dealing in people like product, but she wouldn't have it any other way. She had her first of many loyal girls at her side.Once home, Masashi smiled and welcome her back. Emiko was surprised but happy to be home. She carefully filled her father in on what happened and he nodded, saying only one thing on the subject before never bringing up it's truth again."Good job, daughter of mine."Emiko has since grown her network of girls loyal to her with each successful mission. She's made it her life's work to deal with those using other's lives for person gain. She's opened teahouses across the star and gather's intel like a commodity, but is careful it only goes to those who share her in her goal of making the star a better place.
